Recovering from an injury
A cast, a sprain, or surgery takes a hand out of action for weeks. Keep writing email and notes while it heals, then go back to two hands when you are ready.
Typing with one hand for good
Limb difference, stroke, or a permanent injury. Hamburger turns the standard keyboard into a one-handed one, with no special hardware to buy or carry.
Resting a sore wrist
RSI, tendonitis, or a flare-up that makes one side ache. Give it a day off without stopping work, and switch hands whenever the other one needs a rest.

A baby on one arm, a phone call, a mouse, or lunch. Auto mode notices which side you are using, word by word.

Do I need a special keyboard?
No. Hamburger is a Mac app that works with your existing keyboard. The demo shows the QWERTY mirror.
Can I use my right hand?
Yes. Choose Left or Right, or use Auto to detect the active hand word by word.
How long does learning take?
Slowly at first, and it varies from person to person. Expect to write a short note in your first session and to feel the common words settle in over the following days, with speed building from there.
If you touch type, you start ahead, because every letter keeps the finger it already uses. In the Half-QWERTY study, touch typists using one hand reached half their two-handed speed after about 8 hours of practice. Why the mirror works.
Start with short sessions and judge it on your own writing during the trial. The fully featured trial lasts 30 days from your first real correction; setup and guided practice do not start the clock.
What if I cannot afford a license?
You can request a personal goodwill license without financial documents or an explanation of your circumstances. Requests are subject to review and availability. Read about the goodwill license.

I am Dennis Ju, and Hamburger Keyboard is a one-person project made in California. The name started with a burger in one hand and a keyboard under the other, and the app grew from wanting to keep writing with whatever hand was free.
Everything on this site is written by me, the app is built by me, and support email comes to me. If something does not work for the way you type, I want to hear about it.
